South Carolina is home to 12 major lakes with sizes ranging from 7,500 acres to 110,000 acres. The lakes in South Carolina have contrasting views that make them unique such as Lake Jocassee in the upstate mountains and the swampy wilderness of Lake Marion in the lowlands of South Carolina. No matter where you are in South Carolina there is always a major lake in driving range.

All the lakes mentioned on this website have all the amenities you need for a great lake vacation or day trip. Also, all of these lakes have campgrounds and public landings for boating. Consequently, you can also find South Carolina state parks on most of these lakes.

This website provides photos and information about each of these major lakes including lake specifications, business information, and direct links to buy waterproof lake maps for the lake you choose.

Google Online Maps of each major lake are located on the lake pages on this site. Links to online Lake Levels are also provided on each major lake page on this site.

We are constantly adding more small lakes to this website. So please visit periodically to catch the newest additon to the site. The links above show the lakes I have recently added to the site. I have posted links to my videos on youtube.com and this website.

Lake Levels Look Good for All South Carolina Lakes

The lake levels have been updated for Spring 2013.  All the lakes are ready for lake recreation with no limitations. However, some of the lakes are a few feet below full pool, but are within normal limits for lake recreational activities.  However, you should use caution when boating on any lake below full pool elevation.   The lake level report for Spring 2013 has been posted below.

South Carolina
Lake Levels
- SPRING 2013

All the of lake levels are down a little.  However, all the lakes are completely usable.   Lake Jocassee is the lake with the lowest lake level, but you can still launch a boat down to around 30 feet down.

If you are boating on one of these lakes which have extremely low lake levels, then you should exercise extreme caution when navigating.  Stumps, standing timber, and rocks are boating hazards when the lake levels drop significantly.

Here are the approximate lake levels as of  March 27, 2013

Lake                   +/- feet

HARTWELL             - 4.0   Good

RUSSELL                 FULL POOL

THURMOND           -  6.3  Good

GREENWOOD        - 1.6  Good

JOCASSEE              - 23.6   FAIR (boat ramps still useable)

WATEREE                - 2.2 Good

WYLIE                       - 1.9 Good

KEOWEE                  - 1.9   Good

MURRAY                   - 1.6   Good

MARION                    - 1.5    OK (some ramps closed - check for useable boat ramp)

MOULTRIE                 - 1.0  Good

Smaller lakes in South Carolina usually stay within a couple of feet of full pool elevation most of the year.  No problems to report for the smaller lakes.

Please note:  All lake levels are reported in feet below or above the full pool elevation of each reservoir listed.  Sources:  US Army Corps of Engineers, Duke Energy, and SCDNR Lake Levels.   All data compiled from the websites of the sources sited.
